8 Types Of Kitchen Countertops

Kitchen countertops can be made from just about any material and customized to fit your unique space.

These materials also go through phases of popularity, so some may be more affordable or at a higher price range depending on the demand for them right now.

Granite

Granite countertops have been at the top of the popularity list for at least the last 10 years. They’re durable, typically more affordable than some of the other materials, and can be completely customized as no two pieces of granite look alike.

If you choose granite countertops, keep in mind that it needs to be properly sealed and installed so it won’t absorb moisture in your kitchen.

Marble

If you want to give your kitchen a high-end look that projects elegance, marble countertops could be the right choice. One of the biggest perks of marble countertops is that they’re heat resistant.

Marble tends to be more expensive than granite and it is a more high-maintenance material that might need to be resealed and treated to resist stains.

Quartz

Quartz is another popular choice, similar to marble and granite but even more durable as it isn’t porous and is easier to keep clean, and won’t chip or easily crack.

However, quartz is often the most expensive option and is man-made so you do lose some of the classic unique style you find with natural marble or granite countertops.

Butcher-Block Wood

Butcher-block countertops made of wood have become more and more popular over the past five years, as they appeal to homeowners who like a more minimalist style similar to Scandinavian decor.

These countertops are often the most affordable option and are convenient because you can prepare food directly on the surface (as long as it’s treated correctly!).

If you like the look but don’t want butcher-block wood countertops for your entire kitchen, they could be a great option for a free-standing island.

Concrete

When the modern farmhouse-style kitchen became popular in recent years, concrete started rising in demand for countertops. It can be an ideal option for rustic-style decor.

This type of countertop is nearly impossible to damage and can subtly shift in color over time for a more weathered feel.

Laminate

Laminate countertops are by far the most inexpensive choice for your kitchen. While older versions of laminate can look dated and don’t last, today’s laminates don’t have those issues.

You can pick nearly any color for your countertop, but keep in mind it won’t last as long as granite or marble countertops so you may need to replace them eventually.

Tile

Like just about everything from the 80s, tile countertops are coming back in fashion. It’s a completely unique choice and tile is heat-resistant, which can be an added bonus for kitchen countertops.

Keep in mind that tile is more fragile than other materials and can easily chip or crack.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel countertops are typically found in industrial and restaurant kitchens because they’re durable and easy to clean. Home kitchens have slowly started adopting stainless steel as a countertop material for the same reasons, they can also add a sleek look to a modern kitchen.

If you choose stainless steel countertops, remember that you’ll need to regularly clean them because they smudge, scratch, and dent easily.
