Should You Build A Deck Or A Patio?

Outdoor spaces can add incredible value and ambiance to your home, but it can be difficult to decide what type of outdoor space would be the best choice for you, your family, and your home.

Both decks and patios are great choices to level up your outdoor space and create an area for relaxing, entertaining, and enjoying the outdoors.

Ready to add a deck, patio, or other outdoor space to your home? Our Timber Rock Construction team is here to guide you step-by-step through your custom building project from start to finish!

Consider The “Why”

When you’re trying to decide which type of outdoor space you want to add to your home, the most important question you can ask is, “why?”. For example, do you want to take advantage of a great view? A deck might be a better option. Or if you’re more interested in privacy while you’re outdoors, a patio with hedges or fencing could be the right choice.

What Is Your Land Like?

The type of land your home is built on is an important factor when deciding whether to build a patio or a deck. For a patio, it’s best to build it on flat, level ground, while a deck has more flexibility to be built on more uneven surfaces and inclines.

Get Your Ducks In A Row

Another big difference between the process of building a patio vs. a deck is that most decks require building permits while patios generally don’t. Permits and inspections are required for decks as they are attached to your home and affect its structural integrity.

However, some cities do require building permits for patios, so be sure to check with your local municipality before starting your build.

Consider Maintenance Options

Whether you go with a deck or a patio, you will need to maintain your new outdoor space. Patios can seem durable (and they are!), typically made from brick, concrete, or pavers. However, that doesn’t mean you can ignore your patio when it comes to maintenance.

Cracks can develop over time, moisture can get trapped and lead to moss and staining since patio materials are porous. Regular cleaning with a power washer is a great way to keep your patio looking like new and last for years.

If you choose to build a deck, it will likely be built from pressure-treated lumber. This type of traditional wood deck does require maintenance, as it is susceptible to damage like rot, mold, mildew, and fading from UV rays and wet weather.

Take care of your deck by utilizing pressure washing services, sanding, and re-sealing it regularly.

Personalize Your Home With Confidence

Adding exciting new features to your home like a deck, patio, or other outdoor space is a wonderful way to breathe new life into your home or even position it to sell higher on the market.

You could even consider adding both a deck and a patio area to your home, the sky’s the limit!
